Counter Strike: Global Offensive Review

Counter Strike: Global Offensive: Is it better or worse than Source?
Taking GO as a whole, not so much has changed. The first thing you notice as the game loads up is a more modern looking menu, strikingly similar to other games currently out (makes me feel like the team behind GO are trying to make a Call of Counter Strike). They also seem to guide you towards the new match making system, by subtly hiding the browse server behind the play game screen. The match making is ok I guess, but browsing servers is still the best way to go, especially for clan gaming and modded servers. Though, as of this date, the Classic Competitive match maker mode is utterly terrible - like communism, it means well but is just carried out atrociously. You have to wait what seems a fucking millennium for it to match you with nine other players, before you all have to click ready to start the match – then of course, one joker doesn’t press it. Another ten minutes of waiting (yes, I’ve waited that long), you finally get put into a game, with what always seems to be angry American teens, primary school dropout people with no sense of up or down,  or ‘hard-core’ gamers who hate anyone who isn’t marginally brilliant. Classic Competitive is a 5 A side, basic game of CS, lasting 30 rounds. And god help you if you leave, you’ll get a five minute ban from match making, which increases exponentially every other time you leave (I totalled up a whole weeks ban, which wasn’t fun).
THE most annoying thing about Classic Competitive though, is whilst you’re playing and someone else leaves. A vote menu then appears saying “A player has left, continue with bots?” So basically, that one person who has left will be replaced with a Bot, if EVERYONE on the server votes yes. And, like the clicking accepts, one ass will always click no. The server immediately folds and you’re back on the main menu. A big waste of time, no? I do like the competitive 5 a side gameplay, it really does require you to think and play as a team, but the whole malarkey with leaving and how long it takes to find a bleeding game is just too much hassle.   The other three modes match making are Arms Race (gun game), Demolition (basically gun game), and Classic Casual (just a normal server, literally). They do the job well, but it just seems a lot easier to browse the server list and favourite a good server. Then of course, if you play the same server a lot, you make friends on the server (which is great if you got no friends).
The actual gameplay hasn’t seemed to change too much. When you first join a server, you see how brilliant the graphics are compared to Source, and also how much quicker the ducking and jumping movement are. The Buy Menu is now this pie chart wheel thing, which took me for ever to get used to. It’s meant to be simpler, but I don’t get how. If the up to down list is too complicated, a fucking wheel with the categories for each gun spinning round, with each category having its own wheel of guns isn’t going to be much easier. They’ve also removed the option to pre save four weapon sets in the Buy Menu, which used to save lots of time – especially on servers which have no time to buy weapons. You’ll also notice as you play the game more, that the money earned isn’t in stupid amounts anymore – instead of having $2364 in your balance, you’ll just have $2300.
The addition of new guns is one way Valve has tried to extend the game a bit more. The Mag – 7 and Sawed Off Shotgun are two incredibly powerful and quick shotguns (believe it or not), which literally destroy everything within a short range. But like all shotguns on this game, if you’re far away enough that you can’t feel the breath of the opponent wafting over your pasty skin, these guns do no damage at all.
The PP-Bizon submachine gun isn’t half bad to be honest. It makes up for a less than impressive firepower with its huge 64 bullet clip, and half decent accuracy.
Another new heavy weapon is the Negev machine gun, which in good hands is stupidly powerful. It has a 150 bullet clip and a fire rate so quick Usian Bolt would die of fear. It’s accuracy and recoil though is so absolutely awful, but can be easily tamed by bursting the shots.
The only new pistol (as if they needed anymore) is the Tec-9 (Terrorist team only). It’s got an accuracy, firepower, and fire rate to match the shitty BB pistol under my bed. I’d like to say it makes up for a lack of everything with its 32 clip round, but it doesn’t. It’s like trying to make a kids bumble bee rollercoaster more fun by making it go around twice – it’s still a pile of shit. There’s no point wasting $400 on this, just buy a couple of grenades instead, and stick with the glock.
The final new gun is the Zues, found in the gear section of the menu. It’s a high powered tazor pistol with one shot, costing $1000, with normally one hit kill damage. ‘Sounds good’ I heard people say, but it’s not. It’s crap. I can piss further than this gun’s range is, and if you’re not in range, it doesn’t do any damage at all – literally! For $1000 you could by a whole set of armour or a decent pistol. Just avoid it completely.
CS:GO, seem to have its tongue hovering quite close to Call Of Duty’s arsehole, with the introduction now of the Decoy Grenade. It’s not too bad, popping up on your map as an enemy frantically shooting away. But that’s just it – who on this game stands still shooting there gun into a wall like a maniac – it’s obvious on smaller maps what is a decoy and what isn’t. The only other new grenade is the Molotov (terrorist) or Incendiary (counter terrorist). Costing one of your testicles to buy ($850 for one!) they explode with fire covering a decent area, leaving flames on the floor for about ten seconds. I love these grenades, if I can afford one I’ll always get one. They’re brilliant at pushing the enemy back, as if caught in the flame it slows you down as well as in flicking about 8-12 damage per second – wounds that need licking!
The one problem I have with CS:GO , is the removal of Silencers. Yes, that’s right, they’ve gotten rid of the silencers from all that could have one! I still to this day don’t know why they removed it. The whole idea of the game is to be tactful and sneaky, but that’s just not possible running in screaming with loud guns blasting. If anyone from Valve ever reads this (a big hope I know, we can all dream), BRING IT BACK. Give us an update and write them back into the game.
As for the game itself, massive thumbs up! The new graphics are a lot more pleasant to play with, and killing the opponent seems even more satisfying. In my eyes, Source was the penultimate, the classic. But I think Valve have pulled it off with Global Offensive. It’s a great game, with mostly great gamers playing it. And for £11.99, a bargain! Who in their right mind after playing this would then pay £44.99 for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 129.
Peace.

Back Story - Story Devolopment

Backstory: Joshua James, GS12-8

2042 AD, the Earth is a free planet.

After the great Oil Crash of 2031, Earth was left powerless and with a lack of energy. Great rewards were proposed to the scientist who could provide the planet with a renewable energy source which could power the planet and return it to its former glory. Tensions between countries grew high, as prototypes for devices were developed, but no country was willing to share the technology. In the middle of a UN meeting, on the edge of nuclear fallout, enters a young scientist Livius Denthall. The Macedonian was the leader of Denthall Industries, a small company investing in future technologies. He stood in front of the rabble of quarrying politicians and world leaders, calm and collected, with nothing but what looked like large battery in his hands. With a nod from Livy, the power in the building went off. Silence fell into the room as the UN members sat confused. Livy plugged a cord from the main electrics of the building into the device, and with some clicks of switches, the room’s power returned. The leaders stood in awe at the capability of the device, which was powering the entire building. “Ladies and gentlemen” Livy proceeded, “I give you Nuclear Fusion”.

It had only been three years since the Prototype Fusion Reactor had been developed, and every person on the planet had power once again. Livius had given the technology away for free, with the only terms is that the technology is restricted to no-one. ‘Everyone is equal and therefore deserves it’, he thought. Denthall Industries was booming, investing massively into every market. Livius, once a small scientist, was now leader of the biggest company on Earth.

With a small fortune set aside, Livy began his own personal project of space exploration. He had his own satellite put into stationary orbit above the planet, and began developing new ideas into how to explore space. Livy knew little about space, but a lot about the technology which works in the satellites. He eavesdropped on one of NASA’s head meetings, and overheard that they had picked up a waveband which they could not decipher

Once calm and sharing, now arrogant and selfish, Livius spent two years deciphering the codes which were sent on his own. Eventually, projecting the wavelength through a screen, he listened to the message. “Leader of this planet, we greet you. Your planet holds a core of great desire for our race. We wish to harvest the core. Your planet will be put into stasis to protect the fragile atmosphere, but many humans will die. You are weak, we are strong, and it would be in your best interests to agree. We come from a realm far from this polluted universe. Powers will be granted to you, and you may select a few petty lives which you may spare.” The voice was cold, multi-toned and devious.

Livy pondered for weeks. ‘Is this a hoax? Who should I tell?’ Eventually though, he had made his mind up. He ran to his astronomy office, and replayed the message again. He had no idea how to get back in contact with these aliens. An ear shattering crack echoed from behind his head, and then a bright light followed. His senses contorted as a cold swell fell across his skin. He turned around to see a dark silhouette contrast the bright light. An alien stepped out from the rift, and spoke “your decision pleases us, leader of Earth. We are the Sovereignty of this place now”.

Poisoned by fear and a lust for power, Livius decided which countries should be left alive. He chose his own, Macedonia, Greece, Bulgaria and a few other adjacent countries, as well as selecting about 400 people whom he deemed ‘fit’ to stay alive. He trembled with a grin on his face, sweat pouring from his face. These people were ported by the aliens and dropped in the countries, which Livius referred now as sectors. Within a few hours of the meeting with the aliens, a magnificent bright yellow light flooded the sky. Citizens pondered at the beauty of the force field, with no knowledge at what it was. A devastating crash echoed through the air as an asteroid struck the Earth. The protected sectors felt nothing, but shockwaves ripped through the planet. A huge hole tore through the ground, exposing a glow from the core. Huge earthquakes and dust storms turned the exposed areas into a hellish storm. Few survived. Another shattering crack shook the sky, as a huge rift slashed open the sky. Massive ships and vessels poured out and flooded the sky, flying to every corner of the planet.

Livius Denthall, stood at the foot of his towering headquarters, and embraced the cries of the public. He was their saviour. Yet they did not know he was the cause for all this disaster. “With my technology, I provide you all protection!” He shouted to cheers from the public.

It had been a hundred and twelve years since the great disaster. Sectors were ruled by the Sovereignty guards, and the people obeyed their commands. The people, once promised by Livius a fair life, were poor and slaved away to stay alive. Though little complained, as of course they believed Livius had saved them from death. He addressed them publically, and said that he had seen the incoming meteorite but had no time to get a message out. He lied and said he had developed the shield as a prototype. He was the ruler of this new world.

Nicholas Taylor was a courageous young man, born into sector 2, a hundred and twelve years after the great disaster. His upbringing was harsh, living in a sector ravaged by gangs and the black market. His mother and father worked as tailors in the sectors market, and the income was enough only to support basic life. He had many young friends, his favourite of which was Elise Johansson, a beautiful girl with a strong ambition. Nicholas always detested the people she hung around with, they called themselves the revolution. Many were taken and none returned. There had always been whispers in the air about peoples radical theories about what happened to the planet, over a century ago. Though, most people now born into sectors, very few people actually cared. This life is all they knew.

Elise and Nicholas walked by the boundaries of the sector; two fences stood twenty feet tall, barbed and vicious, between them and the infamous canyon wasteland. Dust clouds to the east crawled along the floor of the canyon, as the gradient slowly rose to the jagged mines just over the horizon. To the west, lush mountains and clouds rolled into the distance. The change in scenery was beautifully dramatic, as if all life had been torn from the wasteland to the East. They sat and watched as mysterious cargo vessels skimmed the pale red sky, transporting there merchandise from the mines to the other sectors. She took his hand, as they remained until the day drew to a close. There seemed to be no worries in sector 2, not even the black market rabble put them off the peacefulness of the night.

Ten years later, on an eerie night, Nicholas heard a creak from his shady room’s window. Elise was sat on the windowsill, with a bandana covering the lower part of her face. She wore the colours of the Custodian Revolution; dark purple laced with highlights of a rich green. She explained how she had been brought to the light about what the real world is. Her ideas of what had happened shocked Nicholas. He believed no word of it. She was adamant and held her ground. “Come with me, we’ll show you what happened a century ago” she said softly. “These freaks have poisoned you, Elise, don’t go” He shouted. She dropped from the ledge and disappeared into the night. He ran to the window to see a few dark figures running into dark twisting alleys of the square.

Nicholas had not seen Elise, or anyone who wore the colours of Custodians since that night. The whole group it had seemed, had been eradicated of had moved underground, preserving their pride. The whole gang systems had fallen apart, and everyone seemed to be getting on in the new perfect community.

Nicholas was stood in his room, staring out the same window as he did when she left, when suddenly a series of loud bangs echoed across the street. Lithian Guards and Sentinels marched through the streets, beating women in their way and shooting men who tried to stop them. Each wore armour, head to toe, embedded with dark grey and red emblems of their creeds. The guards stood at least three foot taller than the tallest man who got in their way, as they shunted civilians with their weapons. They carried massive rifles, none of which Nicholas had seen before. Compartments of a blue liquid glowed underneath the rifles, as some sort of power source.

They had no clear aim, as they marched to the court yard in front of his house. People screamed in terror, as confusion rippled everywhere. Shots ricocheted across the courtyard as a man was shot trying to defend his property. The Sentinels laughed and kicked the body aside, before kicking down the door of that house. Nicholas jumped as suddenly a massive crash bellowed from beneath him. A Lithian Guard, just as tall as the Sentinel, but with sleeker and more devious look. Nicholas’s dad ran to the door, stood inches away from the Guard, as proudly said “Get out of my house!” There was silence for a moment, as the masked Guard stood above his Dad. A shot fired. His Dad stood, blank faced and pale, as a streak of blood rolled from his bottom lip. Nicholas’s vision blurred, he stood shell shocked as he watched his Dad drop to the floor, dead. Time went painfully slow, as his Mother ran to his Father’s side.  The Guard raised the gun, pointed it at his Mother’s chest, and with the terrible cries of rejection from her, shot a single bullet into her delicate body. They lay in a bloody mess and the foot of the stairs. The Guard turned, looked up at Nicholas, and walked out, shutting the door behind him.

Legal Issues - Unit 07 Day one DLC Assignment Blog

Understanding the creative industry: Legal Issues

http://cdni.wired.co.uk/620x413/s_v/Sopa.jpg

Legal isues within the gaming industry play a large role in how the industry works, and how the games are presented to us. There are many ways in which they affect the companies, being EULA's, payment deadlines and rights, and the users in the form of piracy and the SOPA. In the page I'll be exploring how these affect the market.

http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/1/11419/2147835-38_studios___logo.jpg38 Studious and its game, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, is one such company affected by laws in the gaming industry. Curt Schilling, founder of 38 Studios, was offered a hansom  $75 million by the state of Rhode Island to move his company to their state and to create 450 jobs, with fair terms to pay the money back over time. Over 160 employees moved from Massachusetts to Rhode Island in 2010, and they started development on Kingdoms of Amalur and Project Copernicus. Amalur was finally released in early 2012. But due to a massive lack of promotion and advertising, in the first 90 days it only sold 1.2 million (but still more than EA's predictions), compared to the 3 million the company needed just to break even with what they invested into the game. Within a month of that, over 150 people lost their jobs as 38 Studios defaulted as they couldn't pay back the loan to the State. Personally I believe their main downfall was simply a lack of promotion. Before we studied this in class, I had never even heard of 38 Studios, let alone Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. If more people new about the game, surely it would of sold more copies. 38 Studios main focus on promotion was to cross promote with the game Mass Effect 3, by allowing you to unlock new skins similar to the characters from Amalur on Mass Effect 3. This could of brought a lot gamers, but I believe not as much as they would of if they had done TV adverts or billboards. As of this, the company are now bankrupt and now over 150 people who moved states are out of a job. Also, they game could of been amazing, yet due to the lack of promotion many people won't get to experience the game.

Piracy is a huge part of the legal issues debate, in both the industry and the gamer side of the argument. SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act), are a company set up ensure the enforcement of copyright acts. They aim to stop streaming of illegal downloading in all of the internet, but it could have a huge effect on the gaming industry. If SOPA got full grants of power which it is asking for, sites such as Youtube and parts of Google will collapse, as well as free online gaming streaming. The ESA have pledged their support to SOPA, but many members of the association disagree and have boycotted the 2012 E3. I don't believe SOPA is good for anyone. It is an unfair and brutal bill which I believe echos dangerously close to China's Firewall. I understand that stealing is wrong, especially in the games industry as a lot of people have dedicated their expertise into games. But by blocking out sites which allow you to experience games will simple make it harder for up and coming game companies to break through.

The other side of the argument is home piracy. It comes in many forms, such as downloading games, jail breaking and chipping. Piracy in my eyes is wrong - don't be a cheapskate, just buy the game. People have worked hard on games, such as Assassin's Creed II (which has a 96% piracy rate on PC's), so pay the £40 and get the game, show your support. Though often is the case that it's not that simple. as many countries such as China have bans on certain games, so piracy could be the only way of obtaining the game. Every game stolen is a profit lost for companies, and like 38 Studios, companies can very easily default without profits being made.

EULA's can also effect the user of the game. EA and Sony both have the popular EULA, in which when you except, you lose your rights for a class action lawsuit. This basically means if you wish to take Sony or EA to court, you mus do it alone, with no parties. Gamers may have been affected by the games, or had problems with consoles or games, now cannot take them to court (if they do they will almost certainly lose the case). If the person hadn't read the EULA, but still went to court, they could lose massive amounts of money on court fees. This then could affect the gamer, as they could be less inclined to use Sony or EA products. Most parts of the EULA are stating that you cannot file share the copy, your rights to your warranty and things alike, but cases like this always enforce that you should always read the fine print.

There are many legal issues which are affecting the gaming market. Problems such as SOPA can change the industry greatly, wheras many others such as EULA's play smaller parts.
